Course duration and structure

The UEFA C course has a minimum of 60 hours set by UEFA, though in practice most calls in Spain total 80-210 hours including theory, practice and assessment (Asturias 2024-25 adds up to ~210 h).

  • Total duration: Approximately 6 months, typically October to April. Some centres offer an intensive 2-3 month format.
  • Theory sessions: 1-2 sessions per week (in-person, online or blended depending on federation). Covers methodology, planning, rules of the game and group management.
  • Placements (ABR block): Mandatory. You must be part of a coaching staff at a federation club, in categories from under-7 to under-16, for a minimum of 6 months. The club processes a trainee coaching licence for you.
  • Assessment: Written exam, practical assessment (directed training session) and placement report.

Cost: how much does UEFA C cost?

The cost varies significantly depending on who runs the course:

  • Federation pathway (regional federations): Between €200 and €600. Asturias charges around €325, Ceuta about €300 in the 2025-26 call (with discounts for women coaches), others sit at €200-400. This is the most affordable option.
  • Academic pathway: UEFA C has no academic equivalent. The Sports Technician chain starts at TD Level 1, which is already equivalent to UEFA B (Art. 167 bis RFEF Regulations). If you want the academic route, you go one level up; see what TD Level 1 lets you coach.

Remember that tuition may not include exam fees, diploma issuance or licence renewal. Always calculate the total cost before choosing. If you need financial help, the academic pathway gives access to the MEC grant from the Ministry of Education.

What age groups can you coach with UEFA C?

UEFA C qualifies you to coach grassroots football in territorial competitions. The exact ceiling varies by federation:

  • Usual ceiling: Under-7 (Prebenjamín) through Under-16 (Cadete).
  • In some federations: Regional youth coaching is allowed (e.g. FFCV in Valencia).
  • As assistant: You can serve as second coach in categories above your licence ceiling, provided the head coach holds the required qualification.

Where and how to enrol

The enrolment process depends on which pathway you choose:

  • Federation pathway: Register through your regional federation or the RFEF's official OnFormación platform. Calls usually open between June and September, with courses starting in October.
  • Academic pathway (one level above): If you prefer the Ministry qualification, there is no TD equivalent to UEFA C; the chain starts directly at TD Level 1 (= UEFA B). Enrol at an authorised centre (CENAFE, ACADEF, ANEF, or a public IES offering sports education) and pass the access tests.

In both cases you will need a club for your placements. If you do not have one, contact academy coordinators in your area before enrolling — many clubs look for helpers and can facilitate your access.

Renewal and progression

The UEFA C licence is issued for 3 years. To renew it you need to complete 15 hours of continuing education recognised by the RFEF or European national federations. The diploma itself is permanent, but the active licence (which lets you register as a coach in a competition) expires if you do not renew it.

If you want to progress, the natural next step is UEFA B. To access it you need a current C licence and at least 6 months of experience coaching at a federation club. UEFA B raises your ceiling to autonomous youth and senior amateur. You can compare both training pathways in the Sports Technician vs UEFA comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What are UEFA C requirements in Spain?

The minimum requirements are being at least 16 years old, holding a secondary education diploma (ESO or equivalent), submitting a medical fitness certificate and a sexual offences record clearance. No prior coaching experience or playing career is required to enrol in the course.

How much does the UEFA C licence cost?

Between €200 and €600 depending on the regional federation. UEFA C is federation-only: it has no academic equivalent (the Sports Technician chain starts at TD Level 1, which is already UEFA B). The price may not include exam fees, diploma issuance or renewal, so always calculate the total cost.

Can I go from UEFA C to UEFA B?

Yes, UEFA C is the mandatory first step. To access UEFA B you need a current C licence and at least 6 months of coaching experience at a federation club. UEFA B extends your ceiling to autonomous youth and senior amateur level.

Where do I apply for UEFA C?

Register with a regional federation (like RFFM in Madrid or FCF in Catalonia) via the RFEF's official OnFormación platform, where federation calls usually open between June and September. The academic pathway (Sports Technician) starts one level above, at TD Level 1 = UEFA B; UEFA C has no exact academic equivalent.

Can a minor get a UEFA C licence?

Most federations set the minimum age at 16, with parental consent if under 18. Several 2025-26 calls (e.g. Asturias, Ceuta) confirm this explicitly. Always check the specific call from your regional federation before assuming eligibility.

Do I need a club to take the course?

Yes, the mandatory placements require you to be part of a coaching staff at a federation club for at least 6 months. If you do not have a club, contact academy coordinators in your area before enrolling. Many smaller clubs look for helpers and can process your trainee coaching licence.

Have coaching licence rules changed in 2025-2026?

The most concrete current change: from 1 July 2025 the Continuing Education Certificate (15 hours per cycle) is mandatory to keep the federation licence active. UEFA also updated its Coaching Convention with adjustments to minimum hours and equivalences. Always verify the current status on your federation's website before enrolling.
