Grants and discounts for football coaching courses in Spain

Last reviewed: 2026-06-23

There are three lanes of financial aid for the football coaching course in Spain. The key distinction: only the academic pathway (Sports Technician) qualifies for the MEC grant. The federation UEFA licence does not.

  • MEC grant for Sports Technician: RD 179/2026 sets 2026-2027 thresholds and amounts.
  • Regional grants: each region's education authority tops up the MEC grant with its own aid.
  • Federation discounts: women coaches, young people, unemployed or former players in some federations.
  • UEFA federation pathway: no MEC grant; some federations offer occasional discounts.
  • Costs not covered by the grant: materials, exams and travel to placements.

MEC grant for Sports Technician

Sports teaching qualifications taken in full-time in-person mode fall under the general call of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports. The reference for the 2026-2027 academic year is RD 179/2026, of 11 March.

Components a MEC grant for TD can stack. Not every component is granted at every threshold:

  • Fixed income-based amount (€1,700/year): only at Threshold 1.
  • Fixed residency amount (€2,700/year): if you move to a town different from your home address. Available up to Threshold 2.
  • Variable amount (€60 minimum, no fixed cap; calculated from income, assets and grades): available up to Threshold 2. Not granted at Threshold 3.
  • Basic grant: €300/year for non-university studies such as the TD (any threshold up to 3).
  • Academic excellence: up to €125 extra based on your transcript (any threshold up to 3).
  • Tuition: the official credit price at public centres when the threshold is met.

The theoretical maximum stacking all components can exceed €4,500/year at Threshold 1; at Threshold 3, the grant covers tuition and the €300 basic grant, little more.

2026-2027 income thresholds

Thresholds are calculated by family size and decide which components of the grant you qualify for. The real structure:

  • Threshold 1 (the most generous): fixed income amount (€1,700) + residency + variable + basic grant + excellence + tuition. 4-person family: up to €22,107 per year.
  • Threshold 2: you lose the fixed income amount but keep residency + variable + basic grant + excellence + tuition.
  • Threshold 3 (the broadest): only basic grant (€300) + academic excellence + tuition. Variable and residency are no longer granted. 4-person family: up to €40,773 per year. Above this threshold, no grant.

Official 2026-2027 values from RD 179/2026, art. 8. Each year the call adjusts the amounts; always check the latest version at becaseducacion.gob.es.

How to apply for the MEC grant

The procedure is 100% online and mandatory to receive payment:

  • 1. Wait for the call to open. For 2026-2027 it usually opens between March and May 2026, with the application deadline running into the summer.
  • 2. Go to becaseducacion.gob.es with your Cl@ve, digital certificate or username and password.
  • 3. Identify the studies: pick "Enseñanzas Deportivas" and specify the level (Initial Cycle = TD-1, Final Cycle = TD-2, Higher Grade = TD Superior).
  • 4. Fill in income, assets and academic data. Financial data is cross-checked with the tax authority (AEAT); you just authorise the lookup.
  • 5. Submit before the deadline. Even if you enrol later, the application must be in on time. The ruling lands between October and January of the next academic year.

Important: apply even if you are not sure you meet the threshold. The system does the final calculation; if you do not qualify, you lose nothing.

Regional grants

Spain's regions can top up the MEC grant with their own aid for sports teaching students. The offer changes every year and every region:

  • How to find them: search your region's Department of Education for the "ayudas al estudio" or "becas complementarias" call of the corresponding year.
  • What they can cover: tuition, books, transport or aid tied to specific family circumstances.
  • Compatibility: many are compatible with the MEC grant, though some are mutually exclusive. Read the rules.

If you take the TD at a public centre in your region, the centre itself usually has up-to-date information on active regional aid.

Federation discounts for UEFA courses

The federation pathway (UEFA C, B, A, Pro) does not qualify for the MEC grant because federations are not Ministry of Education centres. What some federations offer are discounts on enrolment, which change by federation and season:

  • Women coaches: in line with the UEFA Women in Football plan, several federations apply 20-50% discounts. Verifiable example: the RFFCE (Ceuta) announced up to 80% aid for women coaches in the 2025/2026 season.
  • Unemployed: some federations apply a discount if you provide an active SEPE or regional unemployment registration.
  • Young people and former federated players: occasional discounts based on age or background at regional federated clubs.
  • Instalments: many federations allow payment in two or three instalments, without a discount but easing the upfront load.

Before enrolling, call or email your regional federation and ask about active discounts for the course you are taking. The information is sometimes not on the website.

Costs the grant does not cover

Even if you secure the full grant or a federation discount, some costs almost always fall outside:

  • Materials: manuals, basic equipment, sportswear.
  • Extraordinary exams: resits or extra calls not included in the enrolment.
  • Travel to placements: the federated club where you do your practical period may be at a distance the student has to cover.
  • Administrative fees: licence processing, sexual offences certificate, medical certificate.
  • Module retakes: if you fail and re-enrol a module, that second enrolment is not covered by the grant.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MEC grant cover the federation UEFA C licence?

No. The Ministry of Education MEC grant only covers Ministry-regulated studies, which includes the Sports Technician but not the federation UEFA licence run by the RFEF. If your goal is UEFA C through the federation pathway, look for discounts at your regional federation; no MEC grant is possible.

What is the income threshold for the 2026-2027 MEC grant?

It depends on family size. For a 4-person family, Threshold 1 (the €1,700 fixed income amount) sits at €22,107/year. Threshold 3 (basic grant €300 + academic excellence + tuition) reaches up to €40,773. Above Threshold 3, no grant is granted. Values per art. 8 of RD 179/2026.

Do federations offer an unemployment discount?

Some do, some don't. It is not a standardised RFEF discount: each regional federation applies it in its own calls. Before paying enrolment, call your federation's Coaching School and ask explicitly about unemployment discounts; they usually require a recent SEPE jobseeker registration.

Are there specific grants for women coaches?

Yes, in line with the UEFA Women in Football policy. The offer varies by federation: the RFFCE (Ceuta) offered up to 80% aid to women coaches in the 2025/2026 season, and other federations apply 20-50% discounts. The RFEF and UEFA also run occasional grants for women's UEFA A and UEFA Pro.

Can I combine MEC grant and federation discount?

You do not mix pathways. The MEC grant applies to the Sports Technician (academic) and federation discounts apply to the UEFA licence (federation). What you can combine is the MEC grant with regional grants from your education authority for the same TD; read the rules, some regional grants are mutually exclusive with the MEC one.
