Intensive summer football coaching course: does it exist and does it count?

The summer course is not a marketing invention: federations themselves have offered it. The best documented example comes from the RFFM (Madrid): a UEFA C "summer course" with enrolment from 1 to 25 July and classes from 30 July to 11 September 2022, in a blended format of 58 online hours with daily tutoring plus a 2-hour in-person practical exam, for 300 euros — the same fee as its ordinary editions. We cite it as a format reference, not a live course call: it is the last publicly documented RFFM summer edition, and each year you should check your federation's calendar to see whether it runs again. That same season, another edition that started on 6 June examined 190 students in mid-July.

The FFCV (Valencian Community) has also scheduled summer editions: its coaching school announced UEFA A courses (last week of June and July, in the afternoons) and UEFA B courses (July, in the afternoons). Not every federation does it every year: the offer is irregular and depends on each season's demand, so the only reliable way to know whether your region has a summer edition is to check the current call on the course call radar or ask your regional federation.

A UEFA C passed in August is worth the same as one passed in March. The federation licence carries no season label: if the course is called by a federation within the UEFA pathway, the final qualification is identical and opens the same categories — see what you can coach with each licence. RFFM's summer course makes it plain: same hours (58 online plus an in-person exam), same fee (300 euros) and same licence as the winter editions.

The warning points elsewhere: summer is peak season for ads of private "intensive online courses" that are neither a federation call nor a Sports Technician programme at an authorised centre. There the question is not the calendar but the issuer: what document does it award and who recognises it? Before paying for one, review when an online course counts for coaching and when it does not.

The teaching block can be condensed into weeks; the placement period cannot. In RFFM's summer course, students then had to complete six months of placements at a club team under the supervision of the coaching school's staff. That is the general rule of the federation pathway: the UEFA C requires completing placements at a federated club during the season.

In practical terms: a summer intensive is an excellent way to clear the theory before the season kicks off, but it does not make you a fully licensed coach on 1 September.
