Sports Technician vs UEFA Licence in Spain

Last reviewed: 2026-05-31

The Sports Technician (academic pathway) and the UEFA Licence (federation pathway) are professionally equivalent systems (Art. 167 bis RFEF Regulations), but they start at different levels: the federation pathway begins at UEFA C (€200-600, 6 months), the academic one starts directly at TD Level 1 = UEFA B (€800-1,800, 9-12 months), one tier above. Choose based on your goal, budget and timeline.

Full comparison table

This table compares both pathways on the criteria that matter most when choosing. The data reflects the general framework in force for 2025-2026.

Both pathways are professionally equivalent in Spain since the RFEF declared that Sports Technician titles have the same effect as UEFA licences for coaching in federation competitions.

Equivalences: which level matches which

The RFEF officially declared professional equivalence between Sports Technician titles and UEFA licences. This means both have the same validity for coaching purposes:

  • TD Level 1 (Intermediate Cycle - Initial) = UEFA B → full grassroots (under-7 to under-16).
  • TD Level 2 (Intermediate Cycle - Final) = UEFA A → autonomous youth, Liga Nacional Juvenil, senior amateur and women's Tercera RFEF.
  • TD Superior (Advanced Cycle) = UEFA Pro → Primera División, Segunda División, Primera Federación and national teams.
  • TD Superior and UEFA Pro are professionally equivalent; both pathways reach the highest ceiling.

The equivalence works for professional purposes (which competitions you can coach in), not academic ones. The TD has recognition as an official Ministry of Education title; the UEFA licence has no academic value per se.

When to choose the federation pathway (UEFA)

The UEFA Licence is usually the best option if:

  • You want to start quickly on a low budget: UEFA C costs €200-600 and can be completed in 6 months. It is the shortest path from zero to the bench.
  • Your goal is federation grassroots football: UEFA C qualifies you from under-7 to under-16 (and regional youth in some federations). For most grassroots coaches it is enough.
  • You do not want to sit physical access tests: The UEFA pathway does not require fitness tests or a technical circuit to enrol.
  • You plan to coach outside Spain: UEFA licences have direct recognition across all 55 UEFA member federations.

When to choose the academic pathway (Sports Technician)

The Sports Technician is usually the better option if:

  • You need an official academic qualification: The TD is a Ministry of Education title. It counts as regulated training for public sector jobs, employment pools and academic progression.
  • You want access to grants: As official sports education, you can apply for the MEC grant (€300-1,700 based on income), which the UEFA pathway does not offer. This can make the TD cheaper than UEFA C.
  • You want broader training: The TD includes common modules (anatomy, physiology, psychology, first aid) that the federation pathway does not cover in the same depth.
  • You want a permanent official qualification: TD Level 1 is equivalent to UEFA B for professional purposes (Art. 167 bis RFEF Regulations), but unlike the federation licence the academic title does not expire. To move up you need TD Level 2 (= UEFA A) or the federation UEFA A course.

The main drawback is that you must pass physical and technical access tests to enrol, and the tuition fee is higher.

Can you transfer or switch between pathways?

Yes, recognition processes exist, but they are not automatic:

  • From TD to UEFA licence: If you hold the TD and want the equivalent UEFA licence (e.g. to coach abroad), you can apply for recognition through the RFEF's Coaching Committee (contact: roc@rfef.es). You need to submit your degree certificate and, if for international use, document the job offer or contract.
  • From UEFA licence to TD: This is more complex. Professional competence recognition processes exist that allow accrediting modules already passed, but they are not direct academic equivalences. Consult CENETED or the centre where you want to study the TD.

Since the CSD ratification of Article 167 bis in April 2025, the equivalences are permanent regulation. To process the UEFA licence equivalent to your TD, contact roc@rfef.es.

Which to choose based on your situation

These real scenarios help you decide:

  • "I want to coach my child's team this year"UEFA C. Faster, cheaper, no access tests. Qualifies you for grassroots.
  • "I'm 18 and want a coaching career" → TD Level 1 (= UEFA B). Official permanent academic title with MEC grant access and credit toward sports vocational training and, at some universities, CAFD/INEF degrees.
  • "I already have UEFA C and want to move up" → UEFA B via federation (faster, requires 6 months experience) or TD Level 2 via the academic pathway (= UEFA A, with a permanent title).
  • "I want to coach outside Spain" → UEFA Licence. Direct recognition in 55 countries. If you hold the TD, request the equivalence from the RFEF before leaving.
  • "I'm looking for public-sector work (monitor, municipal coordinator)" → TD. Many public calls require an education-system qualification, not a federation licence.

Frequently asked questions

Is UEFA C equivalent to Sports Technician Level 1?

No. TD Level 1 is NOT equivalent to UEFA C. It is equivalent to UEFA B (Art. 167 bis RFEF Regulations, ratified CSD April 2025). UEFA C is the entry federation licence and has no Ministry academic equivalent. TD-1 = UEFA B, TD-2 = UEFA A, TD Superior = UEFA Pro.

Which is cheaper, UEFA or Sports Technician?

The federation pathway is cheaper in tuition: UEFA B costs €400-1,200 versus €800-1,800 for academic TD Level 1. But the TD gives access to the MEC grant (up to €1,700), which can cover the full tuition. If you secure the grant, the TD can end up free or cheaper than UEFA B.

Is a UEFA Licence valid outside Spain?

Yes. UEFA licences have direct recognition across all 55 UEFA member federations. However, each country may require additional administrative steps (translation, local validation, registration with the host federation). If you hold the TD instead, you can request the official equivalence recognition from the RFEF before leaving Spain.

Can I convert my Sports Technician into a UEFA licence?

Yes, through the RFEF Coaching Committee (roc@rfef.es). You need to submit your degree certificate and, if coaching abroad, document the professional offer or contract. The process is not automatic: it requires a formal application and document verification by the federation.

Does Sports Technician have access tests and UEFA doesn't?

Correct. The TD requires passing 5 fitness tests (sprint, endurance, jump, flexibility, medicine ball) and a technical ball circuit in under 3 minutes. The UEFA federation pathway has no physical access tests: you only need to meet the education and age requirements to enrol.
