The best books for football coaches: a guide by area and level

The best library for a coach is not the longest one, but the one that sorts what to read by what you need to work on and the level you are at.

  • To start in grassroots: Horst Wein and Fútbol base y modelo de juego.
  • Tactics and method: Tamarit on tactical periodisation and Seirul·lo on structured training.
  • Dressing room and families: Entrenador líder and Escuela de padres en el fútbol base.
  • By level: a reading roadmap for the UEFA C and UEFA B courses.

1. Starting out in grassroots football (methodology)

If you coach youth teams, the starting point is still Fútbol a la medida del niño by Horst Wein (published in English as Developing Youth Football Players): it teaches the game through simplified game situations and by age, and underpins much of today's grassroots pedagogy. Alongside it, Fútbol base y modelo de juego, by Rubén Sánchez López de Toro and Abián Perdomo, links how to teach with how to play across the whole development pathway.

For day-to-day work, Los juegos reducidos en el entrenamiento del fútbol (Casamichana, San Román, Calleja and Castellano) gives scientific backing to the small-sided games you already use, and La enseñanza y el entrenamiento del fútbol 7, by Rui Pacheco, orders the move from 7-a-side to 11-a-side.

These books land better once you understand the age-group structure and turn theory into sessions like our grassroots exercises by age.

2. Tactics and model of play

To understand tactical periodisation without getting lost, start with ¿Qué es la Periodización Táctica? by Xavier Tamarit, the clearest Spanish-language introduction to Vítor Frade's model. For the other major Spanish framework, the structured training of Francisco Seirul·lo —who publishes very little first-hand— is gathered in the hard-to-find edited volume El entrenamiento en los deportes de equipo (2017) and explained more accessibly in El microciclo estructurado, by Sebastián Morales.

To bring the model of play onto the pitch, Fútbol. El juego de posición, by Manuel J. Crespo, turns Cruyff and Guardiola ideas into tasks by age group, and El arte de planificar en fútbol, by Julen Castellano and David Casamichana, joins model, load and periodisation with evidence. As historical context, Jonathan Wilson's Inverting the Pyramid explains where today's systems come from.

3. Physical preparation and injury prevention

In fitness, the foundational reference is still Fitness Training in Football, by Jens Bangsbo, and for applied strength and speed work, Gilles Cometti's book on physical preparation in football. For the theory of strength training in Spanish, Fundamentos del entrenamiento de la fuerza, by González Badillo and Gorostiaga, is the classic text.

Prevention deserves its own book: Prevención de lesiones en el deporte, by Daniel Romero and Julio Tous, is the manual for working on injury risk in a structured way. It is especially useful when puberty adds load, something we cover in how to train under-16s without overloading them.

4. Psychology, leadership and dressing-room management

The most applicable book for youth football is Entrenador líder, by Oriol Mercadé, written by a sport psychologist specialised in grassroots, with concrete group-management tools. To understand why some dressing rooms work and others do not, Daniel Coyle's The Culture Code and James Kerr's Legacy are two reads cited across coaching education in every sport.

The relationship with families has specific, verifiable literature: Escuela de padres en el fútbol base, by Javier Torres, and Mamá, Papá, ¡Quiero ser Futbolista!, by David Peris. They complement our five keys to managing parents in grassroots football.

5. Talent and how players learn

To avoid recycling clichés about talent, go to the sources. Daniel Coyle's The Talent Code and Anders Ericsson's Peak are the rigorous source of the concept of deliberate practice. The '10,000 hours' rule, popularised by Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers and often misquoted, is a simplification that Ericsson corrects in Peak.

As a framework for long-term player development, Istvan Balyi's LTAD model sits behind the development pathways of many federations. It was published as Long-Term Athlete Development and has no full Spanish edition, only scattered articles and summaries.

6. The books of the great coaches

From Johan Cruyff, Fútbol. Mi filosofía distils his positional-play idea in a short format. From Arrigo Sacchi and Guido Conti, Calcio totale is the autobiography of the coach who revolutionised AC Milan without ever having been a professional player: leadership, dressing-room management and tactical innovation. And on Pep Guardiola, Martí Perarnau's Pep Confidential is the most detailed access to his daily work.

The block is completed by Carlo Ancelotti's Quiet Leadership (managing dressing rooms and egos), César Luis Menotti's Fútbol sin trampa, and La vida por el fútbol, on Marcelo Bielsa, a portrait of methodological rigour taken to the extreme. It is the same learning lens we use on current coaches, as in the career and method of Luis de la Fuente.

7. What to read for your coaching level

If you are preparing the entry level, prioritise grassroots methodology and understanding of the game: Wein, Fútbol base y modelo de juego and the small-sided games book are the best company for the UEFA C licence requirements.

For the step up to the intermediate level, weight shifts towards the model of play and planning: Tamarit, Castellano and Casamichana, and positional play fit what you will be asked for on the UEFA B course. From there, Seirul·lo's structured training and the elite-method books are what make the difference at advanced levels.

Frequently asked questions

Which book should I read to start coaching grassroots football?

Start with Fútbol a la medida del niño by Horst Wein (in English, Developing Youth Football Players) and Fútbol base y modelo de juego. The first teaches the game by age and game situations; the second links methodology and model of play across the whole development pathway.

Are there books to prepare the UEFA C or UEFA B coaching course?

Yes. For the UEFA C licence, prioritise grassroots methodology and understanding of the game. For the UEFA B course, the model of play and planning matter more: Tamarit on tactical periodisation and El arte de planificar en fútbol, by Castellano and Casamichana, are strong choices.

Is it worth reading books by famous coaches like Guardiola or Cruyff?

Yes, if you read them for method rather than anecdotes. Fútbol. Mi filosofía by Cruyff and Pep Confidential by Martí Perarnau on Guardiola explain how a model of play is built. They give framework and judgement, not recipes to copy as they are.

Do I need English to read the best coaching books?

Not for most of them: nearly all the key works have a Spanish edition. Only a few international titles, such as Long-Term Athlete Development or the Coerver method, are not fully translated. When that is the case, we flag it so you do not look for a Spanish edition that does not exist.
