Free or subsidised football coaching course: what actually exists

As of this review we have not been able to verify any open call for a 100% free coaching course in Spain. The free editions that did exist were one-off programmes — we review them below — and treating them as a standing offer leads to bad decisions, like waiting for a free course that will not come while the seats of the one you could afford sell out.

The good news is that subsidised does exist, and not marginally: some federations subsidise tuition, one refunds up to half of it, there are half-price season promotions and a state grant for the academic route. Combined well, they put the entry ticket to the profession at 150–185 euros in several regions — far from free, but also far from the ordinary 300–400 euro UEFA C fee collected in the price guide.

Two warnings: every aid has conditions (who qualifies, deadlines, payment method) set by its own call, and none is permanent — always check the current edition on the course call radar before counting on the discount. The only route where the course can come out nearly free is the academic one: the Sports Technician is official sports education and falls under the Ministry's general grant call (RD 179/2026 for the 2026-2027 year). If you meet the income threshold, the grant combines components that depend on your situation: a fixed income-linked amount (1,700 euros, Threshold 1 only), residence (2,700 euros, only if you study away from your home town), a variable amount, the basic grant (300 euros for non-university education such as the TD) and tuition at public centres. The theoretical maximum exceeds 4,500 euros per year, but it requires meeting every condition at once: Threshold 1 income and relocating to study. The realistic case of someone taking the TD in their own city at Threshold 1 is around 2,000 euros per year plus tuition, without the residence component.

The two limits that advertising tends to omit: the MEC grant never covers federation UEFA courses (federations are not Ministry centres) and it is not automatic — it depends on income and asset thresholds, and the tuition component applies at public centres. Both are one-off programmes by public bodies with a closed budget, not an open door. If a new one appears in your area, great — but realistic planning means budgeting the course with the subsidies from the previous section and treating any "free" as a surprise, not a plan.
