Minimum qualification per category
Minimum qualification per division according to FRF Circular no. 16 («Qualifications/Diplomas by Modality/Division», 2026/27 season, July 2026), which details everything down to women's and grassroots football. The quick rule: UEFA B covers territorial senior football (Regional Preferente) and all regional and national youth leagues; UEFA C is enough from women's youth and cadete downwards; and UEFA A only appears when jumping to national tiers (Tercera Federación and División de Honor Juvenil), where the licence is processed by the RFEF.
The obligation reaches every team registered with the FRF (Circular 16 and article 75.1 of the General Regulations, updated March 2026), with a maximum of two weeks to fill a coaching vacancy during the season. Non-compliance is referred to the federation disciplinary bodies, with no published fine in the circular. The fitness coach must hold a CAFD degree plus at least UEFA C.
If you want an academic qualification with access to the Ministry grant, consider the Sports Technician: longer and more expensive, but with an official title. TD Level 1 equals UEFA B (TD Level 2 = UEFA A; TD Superior = UEFA Pro), per Article 167 bis of the RFEF Regulations — the legend of Circular 16 itself uses those equivalences. Compare both routes in Sports Technician vs UEFA licence.

Sports Technician and grants in La Rioja
The academic Sports Technician in Football route runs at a single centre in La Rioja: IES La Laboral in Lardero, which teaches both the intermediate and the higher level. Admission opens every year: intermediate-level applications in mid-September (no admission fee, 24 places per class) and the physical entry tests for the higher level in early September — check the current calendar on the Government of La Rioja official procedure. The cycle price is not published in the call; ask the centre.
As for grants, La Rioja offers something almost no other region does: a yearly Government line of grants for training sports coaches, referees and managers (€62,000 in the 2026 edition), for people registered as residents in La Rioja taking sports qualifications. The call opens in spring (the 2026 window ran from 14/04 to 13/05) and subsidises the previous year's expenses, so a course taken this season can apply to the next edition — check the terms to confirm your specific course qualifies. The Sports Technician route at IES La Laboral also gives access to the general Ministry grant. All options are covered in grants and scholarships for the coaching course.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the UEFA C course cost in La Rioja?
FRF's UEFA C for 2026/27 costs €350 and runs in Logroño in person, with mandatory attendance — only 10% of absences can be justified — and a maximum of 32 students per teacher. The requirements are the ESO certificate or equivalent and a medical certificate. Enrolment is on academia.rfef.es and the current deadline appears in the notices on this guide; the price has held steady since the 2025/26 season.
Which licence do I need to coach in La Rioja?
Per FRF Circular no. 16 (2026/27): with UEFA C (€350) you cover women's youth and cadete downwards, including all grassroots football; with UEFA B (€850) you reach Regional Preferente, Liga Nacional Juvenil, 1ª/2ª Juvenil and 3ª Federación Femenino; and UEFA A is only required when jumping to national tiers (Tercera Federación, División de Honor Juvenil). Every registered team must have a qualified coach, with two weeks to fill a vacancy.
What is FRF's UEFA A course like?
The Riojan UEFA A for 2026/27 costs €1,100 and runs in Logroño in dual format: you must be with a team from the start of the course holding a trainee coaching licence, on a club that also has qualified head and assistant coaches, plus hold a UEFA B licence. Pre-registration goes through academia.rfef.es (current deadline in the notices on this guide). Riojan territorial football does not require it — UEFA B covers up to Regional Preferente — so its natural audience is coaches aiming at Tercera Federación or División de Honor Juvenil.
Are there grants for the coaching course in La Rioja?
Yes — and it is almost unique in Spain: the Government of La Rioja runs a yearly line of grants for training sports coaches, referees and managers (€62,000 in 2026) for residents registered in the region. The call opens in spring and subsidises the previous year's training expenses, so a course taken this season can apply to the next edition; check the terms to confirm your specific course qualifies. If you study the Sports Technician at IES La Laboral (a public centre), you can also apply for the general Ministry grant.
Where can you study the Sports Technician in Football in La Rioja?
At IES La Laboral in Lardero, the only Riojan centre with football sports education: it teaches the intermediate level (Sports Technician in Football) and the higher level. Intermediate-level admission is requested in mid-September (no fee, 24 places per class) and the higher level requires passing the physical entry tests held in early September. TD Level 1 equals UEFA B and TD Level 2 equals UEFA A (Article 167 bis of the RFEF Regulations), making it a real academic alternative to the federation courses.
