How to become a futsal coach in Spain

Last reviewed: 2026-06-27

Futsal has its own coaching pathway, separate from outfield football. An outfield UEFA C does not qualify you: the RFEF requires a futsal-specific licence in every federation category.

  • Federation track: Diploma Nacional C Futsal → UEFA Futsal B → UEFA Futsal A.
  • Academic track: Técnico Deportivo en Fútbol Sala (Nivel 1, 2 and Superior), an official Ministry of Education qualification.
  • Primera División Futsal: highest available UEFA Futsal level or TD Superior in Futsal.
  • Segunda División Futsal: UEFA Futsal A or TD-2.
  • Mandatory refresher: 15 hours every 3 years since 1 July 2025.

Futsal is a separate pathway, not a specialty

The single most common question and the clearest answer: an outfield UEFA C licence does not let you coach federation futsal. UEFA treats both as separate disciplines and the RFEF keeps that split in its training framework.

It means that to coach futsal in any federation category — regional included — you must go through the futsal-specific pathway: the federation track (Nacional C Futsal and UEFA Futsal B/A) or the academic track (Técnico Deportivo en Fútbol Sala).

Good news: it is a parallel pathway, not a sequential one. You do not need outfield UEFA C first. You can start straight at Nacional C Futsal if your goal from day one is the court.

Three tiers on the federation track

The RFEF defines a stacked pathway with UEFA minimum criteria at the upper tiers:

  1. Diploma Nacional C de Entrenador de Fútbol Sala, the entry tier. Run by RFEF and taught by regional federations (RFAF, FFCV, etc.).
  2. UEFA Futsal B, with UEFA minimum criteria. Usually requires Nacional C plus minimum experience (typically two seasons, one regional and one national).
  3. UEFA Futsal A, the top tier of the UEFA pathway as applied in Spain. Builds on UEFA Futsal B plus extra experience.

Older texts mention "Nacional B" and "Nacional A" futsal levels. The current RFEF naming (Circular 68, 2025/26 season) is UEFA Futsal B / UEFA Futsal A, transitioning from the previous denominations.

Unlike outfield football, there is no UEFA Futsal Pro tier: UEFA Futsal A is the ceiling of the UEFA pathway as applied in Spain, including for Primera División Futsal.

What each tier lets you coach

This table maps each tier to the head-coach minimum licence in futsal, following the 2025/26 RFEF circulars:

CategoryMinimum federation licenceAcademic equivalent
Primera División Futsal (men & women)UEFA Futsal A (top UEFA tier)TD Superior en Fútbol Sala
Segunda División FutsalUEFA Futsal ATD-2 en Fútbol Sala
Segunda División B Futsal / Tercera FutsalUEFA Futsal BTD-1 en Fútbol Sala
National Youth Futsal LeagueUEFA Futsal BTD-1 en Fútbol Sala
Regional categories (U-12 to senior local)Nacional C Futsal(no academic equivalent)

The academic equivalence for futsal is set by Article 168 of the RFEF General Regulation (the futsal-specific clause), not by Article 167 bis (which covers outfield football only). Article 168, via art. 55.4 of Law 10/1990 (Ley del Deporte), maps Ciclo Inicial TD to UEFA Futsal B categories, TD Grado Medio en Fútbol Sala to mid-UEFA Futsal A categories (Segunda B Futsal, Tercera, División de Honor Juvenil) and TD Superior en Fútbol Sala to professional categories (Primera RFEF Futsal, Segunda RFEF Futsal, Primera División Femenina). Always confirm the current federation circular before enrolling.

Where each tier is taught

  • Diploma Nacional C Futsal: regional federations. Verifiable 2025/26 examples: RFAF (Andalusia, open call) and FFCV (Valencian Community, Nacional C starting 22 December 2025). Enrolment windows usually run from September to December.
  • UEFA Futsal B: run directly by the RFEF National Coaching School, at Las Rozas (Madrid). Less frequent cohorts, typically one a year.
  • UEFA Futsal A: also at Las Rozas, with limited seats and a points-based access table.

For the outfield pathway, see how to become an outfield base coach. If you need the institutional contact for enrolment, the regional directory is at regional federations.

Cost, requirements and the refresher rule

Figures vary by federation and cohort. As a reference based on 2025/26 circulars and the coaching course price guide:

  • Nacional C Futsal: set by your regional federation; varies by cohort and is typically lower than outfield UEFA C. Check the open call in your region.
  • UEFA Futsal B: RFEF fee plus travel to Las Rozas; check the open call.
  • UEFA Futsal A: higher RFEF fee plus merit-based access.

Common requirements: at least 16 years old at course start, ESO or equivalent, medical certificate and, for UEFA tiers, documented prior experience (your regional Coaches' Committee issues the credential).

Since 1 July 2025 the Continuing Education Certificate (15 hours per cycle) has been mandatory to keep an active federation licence. It applies to futsal in the same terms as to outfield football.

Coming from outfield football: what counts and what does not

This is the most repeated question on forums and worth pinning down:

  • Outfield and futsal UEFA licences are separate corpora: holding outfield UEFA C, B or A does NOT exempt you from taking the futsal qualification.
  • There can be cross-credit of common-block subjects (shared theory) if you go via the academic track (Técnico Deportivo en Fútbol Sala). The cross-credit framework is set by the Ministry of Education decrees on TD convalidations.
  • The specific block (game model, system, rules) does not cross-credit: futsal and outfield football are different disciplines with their own dynamics.

For coaches already inside outfield football who want to add futsal, the most efficient route is usually to take the Nacional C Futsal directly and, if the trajectory supports it, apply for UEFA Futsal B with accredited experience.

Frequently asked questions

Does my outfield UEFA C work to coach futsal?

No. The RFEF runs separate pathways for outfield and futsal: you need a futsal-specific qualification (Diploma Nacional C Futsal or academic equivalent) to coach any federation futsal category. Outfield UEFA C does not even unlock regional futsal.

Is there a UEFA Futsal Pro course in Spain?

The highest UEFA Futsal tier currently taught in Spain is UEFA Futsal A, run at Las Rozas. "UEFA Futsal Pro" labels appear in advanced European contexts (Futsal Champions League) but it is not yet a stable RFEF course. Check the National School's open call.

Which regional federations teach Nacional C Futsal?

The RFEF delegates Nacional C to regional federations. Verifiable 2025/26 examples: RFAF (Andalusia) with an open call and FFCV (Valencian Community) with the course starting on 22 December 2025. Calls typically open between September and December.

What licence do I need to coach in Primera División Futsal?

The highest available UEFA Futsal tier (UEFA Futsal A) or, on the academic route, the TD Superior en Fútbol Sala under Article 168 of the RFEF General Regulation and art. 55.4 of Law 10/1990 (Ley del Deporte). The same applies to Primera División Futsal Femenina.

Is there a goalkeeper specialty for futsal?

Yes, separate from the outfield goalkeeper specialty. The Diploma Nacional C Specialist in Futsal Goalkeepers is offered by regional federations; FFCV announced a call starting on 2 February 2026, with Paco Sedano and Rafa Fernández as instructors. It requires a prior coaching qualification, not a clean slate.
