Recognising a football coach qualification in Spain

Last reviewed: 2026-05-31

To coach in Spain with a foreign qualification you need two procedures: 1) homologate your secondary education with the Ministry of Education (fee €25-48, timeline 3-8 months) and 2) obtain Recognition of Competencies (RoC) from the RFEF to validate your coaching licence as UEFA-equivalent (contact: roc@rfef.es). If your title is from a UEFA federation, the process is more straightforward; if from CONMEBOL, AFC or another confederation, the RoC is mandatory.

Step by step: from abroad to the bench in Spain

This is the real process a coach with a foreign title follows to coach officially in Spain:

  • Step 1 — Academic homologation: Apply to have your secondary education (ESO) or high school diploma recognised by the Ministry of Education. This is a prerequisite for enrolling in any official course or for the RoC to proceed. Fee: €25.61 (ESO) or €47.82 (Bachillerato). Average timeline: 3-8 months. Applied online with a digital certificate or Cl@ve.
  • Step 2 — Gather coaching documentation: Prepare your coaching title, course certificates, syllabus hours, licences issued by your home federation and a portfolio showing real bench experience.
  • Step 3 — Apply for the RoC at the RFEF: Submit the Recognition of Competencies application to the RFEF National Coaching School (roc@rfef.es). Include all documentation from step 2 plus your academic homologation. If you have a job offer in Spain, attach it.
  • Step 4 — Assessment and certificate: The RFEF evaluates your file. If you pass, you receive the RoC UEFA certificate, valid for 3 years, which entitles you to apply for the UEFA licence equivalent to your training.
  • Step 5 — Licence and regional federation: With the RoC certificate, apply for your UEFA licence through your regional federation. You can now register as a coach in federation competitions.

EU coach vs non-EU coach: different processes

The process changes depending on where your title comes from:

  • Title from a UEFA federation (EU/EEA): If your licence was issued by a UEFA member federation (France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, etc.), recognition is more straightforward. The UEFA Coaching Convention facilitates mobility between federations. You still need to process the licence with the RFEF and there may be documentation and registration requirements.
  • CONMEBOL title (Latin America): The RoC is mandatory. The RFEF will assess your training, experience and portfolio. CONMEBOL licences (Argentina, Colombia, Chile, etc.) have no automatic recognition — equivalence is assessed case by case.
  • AFC, CAF, Concacaf or other confederation titles: Same process as CONMEBOL: mandatory RoC with the RFEF, assessed individually.

In all cases, academic homologation of your secondary education with the Ministry of Education is a necessary first step.

Documents you need to prepare

This is the specific list of documents you should gather before starting the procedures:

  • For academic homologation: Original or certified copy of your secondary/high school diploma, transcript of grades, sworn translation if not in Spanish, ID (DNI/NIE/passport) and the Ministry's application form.
  • For the RoC (RFEF): Coaching title issued by your home federation, academic certificate with course hours and content, previous coaching licences, record of teams managed (portfolio), employment contract or job offer in Spain (if available) and sworn translation of all non-Spanish documentation.

Do not send originals to private intermediaries. Official procedures are managed by the Ministry of Education (homologation) and the RFEF (RoC). Always prioritise official offices and verified email addresses.

Estimated cost and timelines

The total cost depends on your situation, but these are the usual ranges:

  • Academic homologation: €25.61 (ESO) or €47.82 (Bachillerato). Timeline: 3-8 months. Possible additional costs: sworn translation (€50-150 per document).
  • RoC (RFEF): The procedure itself carries an administrative fee. Timeline: variable, depends on the National School's workload. Contact roc@rfef.es for details.
  • UEFA licence once approved: Issuance fees from the regional federation (similar to those for a Spanish coach).

The complete process, from starting the homologation to holding an active UEFA licence, can take 6 to 12 months. Start the academic homologation as early as possible — it is the slowest step.

What you can coach once recognised

Once you obtain the RoC certificate and the equivalent UEFA licence, your rights are the same as any Spanish coach with that licence:

  • If recognised as UEFA C: Grassroots football, under-7 to under-16.
  • If recognised as UEFA B: Up to autonomous youth, Liga Nacional Juvenil, territorial senior amateur and women's Tercera RFEF as head coach.
  • If recognised as UEFA A: Up to Tercera RFEF, Segunda RFEF and División de Honor Juvenil.
  • If recognised as UEFA Pro: Any professional category, including Primera División, Segunda División and Primera Federación.

Note: the CSD ratified in April 2025 (Article 167 bis) that UEFA A can act as head coach in Primera Federación.

Frequently asked questions

Is homologation the same as licence recognition?

No. Homologation refers to academic recognition of your secondary education by the Ministry of Education. Recognition of Competencies (RoC) is the sports procedure with the RFEF to validate your coaching title as equivalent to a UEFA licence. You usually need both to coach in Spain.

Can I coach in Spain with a CONMEBOL title?

Yes, but you need the mandatory RoC from the RFEF. Licences from CONMEBOL federations (Argentina, Colombia, Chile, etc.) have no automatic recognition in Spain. You must submit your title, academic certificate, experience portfolio and, if available, a job offer. Contact roc@rfef.es to start the process.

How long does the whole recognition process take?

The complete process takes 6 to 12 months. Academic homologation with the Ministry takes 3-8 months. The RFEF RoC depends on the National School's workload. Start the academic homologation as early as possible because it is the slowest step and blocks everything else.

Do I need to homologate my secondary education?

Yes, it is a mandatory prerequisite. For the RFEF to process your RoC, you need your foreign ESO or Bachillerato homologated by the Ministry of Education. The fee is €25.61 (ESO) or €47.82 (Bachillerato) and it is processed online through the Ministry's electronic office.

Is it easier if my title is from a UEFA country?

Yes. The UEFA Coaching Convention facilitates mutual recognition among all 55 member federations. If your licence was issued by a UEFA federation (France, Portugal, Germany, etc.), the process is more direct and faster. You still need to register with the RFEF and process the licence with your regional federation.
