Summary: the real ceiling of each licence

UEFA A and UEFA Pro are the two rungs that separate an elite amateur coach from a fully professional one. The difference is not prestige: it is maximum category as head coach. UEFA A is the natural ceiling for semi-professional and national amateur football; UEFA Pro is the only licence that opens Primera and Segunda División professional football.

To place both on the education map, start from the complete list of UEFA licences and categories.

UEFA A: ceiling for Spanish semi-professional football

UEFA A is the logical destination for coaches who want to be head coaches at national amateur or elite youth level. It covers the three key categories an ambitious technician usually aims for:

  • Tercera RFEF (4th tier): Reserve sides and historic clubs. Competitive bench with real weekly demands but modest budget.
  • Segunda RFEF (3rd tier): Access to promotion to Primera Federación. Greater media and results pressure.
  • División de Honor Juvenil: The elite of Spanish youth football. Talent pool of top clubs.

UEFA A also clears you as assistant to the head coach in Primera Federación. This is the formula many coaches use to log professional bench seasons before investing in UEFA Pro.

UEFA Pro: the only licence for full professional football

UEFA Pro is the highest European licence and the only one recognised by the RFEF to lead as head coach in Primera División, Segunda División and Primera Federación. Without it, a professional club can hire you as assistant or as a developing coach, but you cannot sign the match report as titular head coach.

Regulatory note (2025-26): in April 2025 the CSD ratified the reform allowing UEFA A to act as head coach in Primera Federación (Article 167 bis of the RFEF Regulations).

The names you see every weekend in LaLiga all hold UEFA Pro: Luis de la Fuente (Spain), Carlo Ancelotti, Diego Simeone, Xabi Alonso, etc. When a club announces an interim coach without UEFA Pro, it is usually a short-term solution while the federation grants a waiver or the club searches for a permanent replacement.

For one of the best-documented paths, see the Luis de la Fuente career analysis — he went through every licence before reaching the senior bench.

Practical differences between A and Pro

Beyond the category ceiling, UEFA A and UEFA Pro differ on three axes that matter when deciding:

  • Cost and time: UEFA A usually completes in one academic year. UEFA Pro requires 18-24 months of dedication and a several-thousand-euro investment (check current RFEF intake).
  • Access: UEFA A opens periodically through regional federations and academic centres. UEFA Pro runs periodic intakes (not necessarily annual) managed by the RFEF, with high competition.
  • Professional ROI: with UEFA A you can earn a living from the bench (senior amateur, Tercera/Segunda RFEF, elite club academies). UEFA Pro opens the elite media spotlight but also higher firing risk and a small number of available seats.

The honest criterion: UEFA Pro only makes sense if your specific professional goal is to coach in Primera or Segunda División or aspire to national teams. If your realistic market is Tercera/Segunda RFEF or elite academy work, UEFA A already covers and is a much better investment.

Assistant and second coach roles in higher categories

Both UEFA A and UEFA Pro open the elite bench for non-head coaching staff roles. This is the route many analysts, assistant coaches and fitness coaches use to log experience in Primera División before applying for their own bench.

  • UEFA A as assistant: Primera Federación and, with RFEF authorisation, Segunda División.
  • UEFA Pro in any role: No restrictions.

This route explains why many young coaches prioritise reaching UEFA A over UEFA Pro: logging minutes on a professional bench as assistant for 2-3 seasons is worth as much as any course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I coach Segunda RFEF with UEFA A?

Yes, as head coach. Segunda RFEF (3rd national tier) is one of the natural competitive ceilings for UEFA A. You do not need UEFA Pro unless you get promoted to Primera Federación as head coach.

Can I coach Primera Federación with UEFA A?

Only as assistant or as interim coach with RFEF authorisation in specific circumstances. UEFA Pro is mandatory to sign as head coach in Primera Federación, Segunda División and Primera División.

Who is required to hold UEFA Pro?

Any coach who wants to sign as head coach in Primera División, Segunda División (LaLiga and LaLiga Hypermotion) or Primera Federación. It is also required to coach senior national teams and UEFA club competitions. The CSD ratified in April 2025 (Article 167 bis of the RFEF Regulations) that UEFA A can act as head coach in Primera Federación.

How much does UEFA Pro cost in Spain?

It is the most expensive licence in the Spanish system, costing several thousand euros with limited seats. The exact figure varies by RFEF intake and does not include travel costs for in-person modules. Check the current RFEF call before planning.

How long from UEFA A to UEFA Pro?

Minimum 2 years between getting UEFA A and being eligible for UEFA Pro (RFEF requires 24 months of experience with UEFA A in force, some intakes 18). Once admitted, the course lasts another 18-24 months. Overall, a minimum of 4 years from UEFA A to having UEFA Pro in force.

Is there an academic pathway for UEFA Pro like for UEFA A?

No. UEFA Pro is only awarded through the RFEF (in collaboration with regional federations). There is no Sports Technician equivalent at the highest level: the academic pathway only reaches Level 3, which equals UEFA A.

Can I be assistant coach in LaLiga without UEFA Pro?

Yes, as assistant coach, analyst or fitness coach with a sports qualification, UEFA A is enough. Many future elite head coaches have spent 2-4 seasons in LaLiga coaching staff roles with UEFA A before getting UEFA Pro and stepping up to the titular bench.
