The coach's three decisions

RutaMister reading: we analyse three decisions by Jagoba Arrasate in his first match back at Osasuna, based on the club's report and his press conference. The effects described are observable; the tactical intentions are an editorial interpretation, not confirmed instructions from the coaching staff.

1. A pressing start guided by Budimir and Moi Gómez

Problem: Racing usually play with a high line, according to Arrasate. Osasuna wanted to start with energy. Observed decision: Budimir and Moi Gómez guided the press, and Dubasin and Rubén García jumped in afterwards. That description comes from the coach. Effect: there was a disallowed Dubasin goal in the 4th minute, Budimir's penalty in the 9th and another disallowed goal in the 33rd. These facts do not prove on their own that the press was the cause.

2. The double substitution on 67 minutes to regain energy

Problem: Arrasate said energy and composure were missing in the second half. Racing also packed players inside. Observed decision: in the 67th minute, Torró and Osambela replaced Iker Muñoz and Moi Gómez. Effect: Osambela scored the 2-0 in the 88th, his first LaLiga goal. The goal came twenty-one minutes after the change, so the report does not let us credit that decision alone.

3. Fresh legs on 76 minutes to protect the 1-0

Problem: at 1-0 with about fourteen minutes left, Osasuna had to close out the match. Observed decision: Arguibide and Moro came on for Rosier and Dubasin. Effect: the 2-0 came from a counter-attack and the rebound of an Arguibide shot. The report does not explain why the coach chose those replacements.

Starting XI in 4-3-3

The match in 90 minutes

Osasuna beat Racing de Santander 2-0 at El Sadar, in front of 20,818 spectators. Juan Martínez was the referee. The line-up, read as a 4-3-3 from the order of the official team sheet, was: Aitor Fernández; Bretones, Boyomo, Catena, Rosier; Iker Muñoz, Moncayola, Moi Gómez; Rubén García, Budimir and Dubasin.

The match began with a disallowed goal in the 4th minute. Dubasin's goal did not count because of a prior offside by Budimir. Racing saw the first yellow card, for Mantilla, in the 6th.

Budimir put Osasuna ahead from the penalty spot in the 9th minute. Belocian had brought him down in the box. It was 1-0.

Osasuna kept looking for a second before the break. Rosier was booked in the 28th. In the 33rd, a second Dubasin goal was disallowed for offside, and Racing goalkeeper Agirrezabala cleared another of his shots off the line. At the end of the first half, Zabiri had Racing's best chance with a shot from the edge of the box.

The second half was about the substitutions. Racing replaced Almeida with Andrés Martín at half-time. Budimir was booked in the 60th and, in the 67th, Arrasate made his first double change. Osasuna moved the bench again in the 76th with two more replacements.

Osambela made it 2-0 in the 88th minute. He scored on the rebound from an Arguibide shot, after a counter-attack. It was his first LaLiga goal. Rubén García made way for Raúl García de Haro in the 91st.

Racing also reshaped their side and collected cards. Salinas was booked in the 51st and Iván Martín in the 80th. Pablo García, Aarón Martín, Villalibre and Guliashvili came on in the 69th, 83rd and 92nd minutes. It was Osasuna's first clean sheet since 31 August.

What the coach said

Arrasate praised the team's start and its defensive solidity. Two lines from his post-match press conference, in the club’s official English translation:

“The start, that first 15 minutes, was what I believe Osasuna should be. We scored a goal, had another disallowed, and Julen (Agirrezabala) was active.”Post-match press conference, 18 October 2026
“A clean sheet is fundamental, and solidity must be a hallmark of Osasuna.”Post-match press conference, 18 October 2026

Take it to training: pressing the first minutes with two guides

Task proposed by RutaMister, inspired by the analysis. It is not an exercise attributed to Jagoba Arrasate. Goal: two players guide the opponent towards one side and the rest of the team steps up together to win the ball back early.

  • Players: 7 v 7 with goalkeepers.
  • Space: 40x30 metres, with two goals.
  • Duration: 4 blocks of 4 minutes, with 1 minute of rest.
  • Organisation: at the start of each block, the team without the ball names two guide players, who press first.
  • Rule: if the team wins the ball in the first 90 seconds of the block, its goal counts double.
  • Cue: the two guides close the pass to the centre and push the opponent towards a wing; the rest jump when the ball gets there.

Coach's correction: "The first two show the way; the others squeeze when the ball reaches the wing."

What to watch: whether the guides steer the opponent to the same side and the rest step up together without gaps.

Frequently asked questions

How are Coach of the Matchday points calculated?

Each coach starts from a base of 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. That base is multiplied by 1 + (own previous position − opponent previous position) / 40, capped between 0.5 and 1.8: the lower the team started and the higher the opponent, the bigger the multiplier.

Why does Jagoba Arrasate score 2.85 points and not 3?

The win is worth 3 points. The multiplier is 1 + (17 − 19) / 40 = 0.95: Osasuna finished 17th in 2025/26 and promoted Racing count as 19th, so 3 × 0.95 = 2.85. He finishes ahead of Hansi Flick (2.7) and Diego Simeone (2.47). He enters the ranking with those points and does not inherit Ramis’s total.

Is this a fantasy game like Biwenger or Mister Fantasy?

No. Coach of the matchday is RutaMister's own editorial ranking of LaLiga head coaches, not players, and requires no squad-building or competing against other users. Biwenger, Mister Fantasy or Comunio are player fantasy games; this is an editorial piece about dugout management.
