1. Double pivot and Isco at number 10 in the 4-2-3-1

Observed decision: Pellegrini fielded Facundo Bernal and Deossa as a double pivot, with Isco playing as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1. Outcome: the 45th-minute goal came down the wing: a move involving Abde, Antony and Troy Parrott, away from the double pivot. The system held the lead, but the goal alone does not credit that choice.

2. Bellerín replaces Ángel Ortiz at half-time

Problem: manage the risk of a second yellow card for Ángel Ortiz, booked in the 24th minute, just as Getafe strengthened their attack. Real Betis beat Getafe 1-0 at La Cartuja with a 4-2-3-1. Valles started in goal; the back line featured Ángel Ortiz, Natan, Valentín Gómez and Junior Firpo. Facundo Bernal and Deossa formed the double pivot. Antony, Isco and Abde played further forward, with Troy Parrott as the central striker.

The match opened with cards for both sides. José Bordalás was booked from the touchline in the 19th minute. Ángel Ortiz was booked in the 24th, and Davinchi, of Getafe, in the 25th. The goal came right before half-time, in the 45th minute. Abde chested down a long ball and set up Antony. He slid it to Troy Parrott, who crossed from almost the byline. Abde finished with his right foot for 1-0, a goal the officials validated after several minutes of review. Both sides made changes right after the restart. Betis brought on Bellerín for Ángel Ortiz, booked before half-time. Getafe introduced Johan Mojica and Enes Ünal for Davinchi and Satriano.

Getafe created their clearest chance right after their substitutes arrived. Enes Ünal tested Valles with a waist-high, central shot in the 50th minute, which the Betis goalkeeper saved. Mario Martín, of Getafe, was booked in the 53rd. Pellegrini replaced Isco with Ceballos in the 61st, and Getafe answered with Boselli on for Andrés García in the 69th.

• Players: 7 v 7 plus goalkeepers, with 3 substitutes per team ready to simulate late relays.
• Area: a reduced pitch, 40x30 metres, with two large goals.
• Duration: three 7-minute blocks; the defending team starts each block with a 1-0 lead.
• Organisation: free-flowing play; at the 4-minute mark of each block, the coach swaps two players from the defending team.
• Rule: if the attacking team equalises, the block restarts with the 1-0 lead reset for the opponent.
• Cue: players coming on ask for the ball within the first 10 seconds to set the tempo.

Coaching intervention: “Are you coming on to defend, or to take charge? Ask for the ball now.”

What to look for: whether the defending team holds the lead after each swap, and how many seconds the substitute takes to touch the ball.
